Nursing Home Abuse

Reports of abuse of residents at nursing homes is prevalent, with cases of malnutrition and inadequate medical assistance including untreated bedsores and preventable accidents.

There are some particularly shocking reports of residents suffering nursing home abuse at the hands of staff members. For instance, some residents report being slapped, punched, kicked or chocked by staff members, causing injuries such as broken bones or lacerations.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducts inspections of nursing homes annually in order to enforce the specified standards. The number of nursing homes being cited for violations rises every year. A report released by the minority staff of the Special Investigations Division found that more than 70 percent of homes in Pennsylvania Congressional district failed to meet federal health and safety standards during state inspections.
