SEVERAL FACTORS COME TOGETHER TO MAKE THE ELDERLY VULNERABLE

On behalf of Odom Law Firm posted on Thursday, April 21, 2016.

The elderly population is vulnerable in several different ways. For people who are in nursing homes, vulnerability can sometimes lead to abuse and neglect. When abuse or neglect end up causing the elderly resident to suffer, action must be taken to stop the atrocious behavior and help the resident get the care he or she needs to recuperate. Understanding some of the reasons why the elderly population is vulnerable is one step that you can take to help stop the abuse and neglect.

As people age, they can become physically frail. This often means that they need more help to do daily tasks, such as dressing themselves and similar activities. With that need for help comes the opportunity for the person who is supposed to help to shirk their duties and do as little as possible, which means the resident suffers.

Another issue that can lead to this vulnerability is the mental state of the elderly resident. Elderly people don't want to feel like they are bothering others. Because of that, they might not want to speak up when someone isn't treating them the way they should be treated. Additionally, as mental function and cognitive ability wane, speaking up might not be possible for the resident.

The abuse and neglect that nursing home residents suffer can range from physical abuse to other types of abuse, such as sexual, financial and emotional. In every case, the nursing home resident suffers because someone who is being paid to care for him or her wants to make a fast dollar instead of taking the time to care for people who deserve and pay for proper care.
